Lactulose is broken down in the bowel into products that pull water out from the body and into the bowel to soften poo and make it easier to pass. It’s called an osmotic laxative. People with liver disease can sometimes get problems in their brain (hepatic encephalopathy).
docusate lactulose If you are using lactulose for the treatment of a condition known as portal-systemic encephalopathy, you should talk to your doctor before using it with docusate. The loose stools produced by treatment with docusate may make it difficult to know when you have achieved an adequate dosage of lactulose.
What are the side effects of macrogol?
The most common side effects are stomach pain, diarrhoea, wind and a sore bottom (anus). These are usually mild and shortlived. Most macrogol sachets contain sodium chloride, potassium chloride and sodium bicarbonate (known as electrolytes).
Is it safe to take Movicol every day?
Movicol ready-to-take sachets ️ To treat constipation you can take two sachets up to three times a day, depending on how bad your constipation is. ️ You should drink the medicine straight from the sachet – there is no need to dilute it. However, you should make sure you are drinking plenty of fluid throughout the day.
Is lactulose a macrogol?
In the management of chronic constipation, treatment should be started with a bulk-forming laxative, whilst ensuring good hydration. If stools remain hard, add or change to an osmotic laxative such as a macrogol. Lactulose is an alternative if macrogols are not effective, or not tolerated.

When is disimpaction achieved? Most children will have achieved disimpaction when their stools are loose and watery for at least 24 hours – type 7 on the ‘Bristol Stool Scale’ on the last page. It is normal for this to take 7 to 14 days . If it takes longer than 14 days make an appointment to see your child’s GP.
