Ideally, you’ll want to mow and rake before fertilizing, so that excess lawn waste is removed and the fertilizer will have an easier time reaching the soil. Aerating your soil before fertilizing can also help; the best times to aerate are when your grass is actively growing, such as in spring or early fall.
HOW LONG CAN fertilizer sit on lawn before watering? If your lawn gets liquid fertilizer, wait until it dries before watering, about 2-4 hours. If it’s granular fertilizer, water right away. One exception: if you also got spot weed treatments at the same time, wait for that to dry before watering, or the water will wash off the weed killer before it can work.

To prevent crabgrass from germinating in your lawn, apply a pre-emergent early spring because this is the time when the weed will start to sprout in your lawn. Any time between late March and early April are the perfect times to put down a preemergent herbicide such as Snapshot to give you protection all season long.

Typically, you need to mow your lawn once a week to 2 or 3 inches tall before applying the preemergent. Make sure your lawn mower’s blades are sharp because preemergent herbicides may damage lawns that are already stressed from split stems and subsequent disease.

Can I apply Scotts Step 3 twice?
Answer: Scotts Step 3 Lawn Food with 2% Iron is designed to be applied during June, July, and August. If you feel your lawn would only need two applications and only want to apply the product in June and July, that is okay as well. Per the manufacturer, just make sure you allow 4-6 weeks between applications.
Should I fertilize in the morning or evening?
Fertilizing your lawn in the morning enables you to take advantage of cooler temperatures and morning dew to reduce the risk of burning the grass. As you spread the fertilizer and water it in, the nutrients will have the best chance of reaching the roots and being absorbed quickly.
What time of day should I fertilize my lawn? The late afternoon or early evening is the best time of day to fertilize your lawn. With that said, you should never fertilize if there is direct hot sunlight on your lawn. This can lead to burning.
Can you walk on grass after fertilizing?
Allow 24-48 hours, depending on the label, after applying most synthetic fertilizers before any pets, kids or pregnant women walk on the lawn. Water the lawn and allow to completely dry before using the lawn after fertilizing.
What if it rains after I fertilize my lawn? Heavy rain right after fertilizing, however, may make the fertilizer run off the soil or into the lower layers, where it won’t do as much good for your roots. Using fertilizer on wet grass the day after heavy rain is also not ideal, because the fertilizers can stick to wet grass and damage it.
Is it OK if it rains after fertilizing lawn?
Here’s the deal: rainfall after fertilization is absolutely not a bad thing. In fact, it’s good! Water helps fertilizer fully absorb into the soil. Mild rain after you fertilize is nothing to worry about.
